A message from retired LAFD Battalion Chief Evan Williams
“My name is Evan Williams and I recently retired as a Battalion Chief from the Los Angeles Fire Department after nearly 34 years of service. During my tenure in Battalion 14, I got to know the streets and boulevards of Los Angeles fairly well and I now would like to share some of that knowledge and how I believe a device such as SirenSensor can make cities as large as Los Angeles safer for the public and all emergency vehicles.”
“As you may know, we are often tasked with “specialized” assignments or placed on various committees as part of our officers’ responsibilities. I am writing to you to share some information that I gained based on personal observation during one of my specialized assignments and to relate what I feel can be a very exciting opportunity for you to improve the level of safety for not only your constituents in your district, but for the citizens in every city large or small across America and even globally.”
“Approximately two years ago I was assigned (by Deputy Chief Keane) to observe a demonstration of a traffic control device at the Los Angeles Police Department’s EVOC training facility near the Van Norman Dam. At the site I was very impressed with the device, named SirenSensor which had the ability to detect the frequencies of sirens from emergency vehicle sirens at great distance. The device was configured to communicate with a control box which, when activated by a siren, had the ability to control a traffic signal and switch the traffic appropriately in order to stop cross traffic as the emergency vehicle(s) safely passed through the intersection. I recall that I was not only very impressed with the demonstration but also very excited that such a simple system could result in a drastic reduction in intersection accidents and greatly reduce the number of associated injuries and possible fatalities for both First Responders and civilians.”
“Based on my observations both as a Chief Officer and as a driver who had responded to emergencies on many occasions, I felt that the ability to control an intersection would reduce accidents and injuries in many situations, including daily emergency response by fire, medical and police vehicles and police pursuits. I have observed additional demonstrations of the device and I have continued to be impressed with both its performance and the many design improvements that have been made since its inception.”
“I would be more than happy to discuss the merits of the device further, and give anyone what I saw, which was confirmation of a first hand demonstration of the excellence of the design of this device. Compared to other products out there that claim to achieve the same affect, I feel it would be very unwise for any city to miss the opportunity to be on the cutting edge of this sleek, simple and exciting technology – in fact I can easily see it being utilized throughout the world very quickly.”
Sincerely,
Evan C. Williams
